Learn to make your own paper from recycled materials with Lulu Luyao Chang. We are partnering with our friends BaQyard Babes (Chicago based Queer Community Event & Workshop Collective) to bring you this guest artist workshop.
Join local artist Lulu Luyao Chang to transform recycled paper into beautiful handmade sheets infused with dried flowers and plants. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the basics of papermaking—from pulping old books and newspapers to forming, pressing, and drying your own unique creations. Participants will experiment with textures, colors, and natural elements to create one-of-a-kind paper suitable for writing, drawing, or mixed-media work.
What’s Included:

Introduction to papermaking, including how to create pulp from recycled materials and form sheets

All materials provided, including mould and deckle, recycled paper, dried flowers, and other materials for embedding

Each participant will make 3–4 unique A5-sized sheets
Note:
Participants are welcome to bring their own recycled materials or tissue paper to experiment with.
Additional Information:

Handmade sheets take approximately 4–7 days to dry

If participants plan to take their work home the same day, they are encouraged to bring a wood panel or hardcover books as a support for transport

Once fully dried, you will receive an email notice. Works can also be picked up from me in the Humboldt Park area

Accessibility Information - Our Studio is located on the second floor and is only accessible through a flight of stairs.
Class Fees cover all supplies and materials. No prior experience needed, all are welcome! Please wear clothes you do not mind getting a bit messy.

Lulu Luyao Chang is a multidisciplinary artist based in Chicago, working across installation, sculpture, and video. She is also the founder of DAiLY SPECiAL, a brand focused on hand-built ceramic wearable and functional objects made from high-fire stoneware. Lulu holds an MFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts, New York, and a BA in Art History from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing.
